The U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission in Argentina, Albert Kraaimoore, congratulated the 282 students participating in the third edition of the Friends of Fulbright Exchange Program for Undergraduate Students. During the pre-departure student orientation held at Argentina’s Ministry of Education, Mr. Kraaimoore was joined by the Director of International Cooperation Francisco Miguens, and Fulbright Commission Executive Director, Norma González.
Students will travel to the United States in January to participate in a 5-7 week academic and cultural program. During the program, participants will take courses related to their career, improve their English, deepen their understanding about American culture and interact with their counterparts in the U.S.
The winners of the Friends of Fulbright 2018 edition come from 50 higher education institutions from throughout Argentina. Divided in groups of 15 students each, participants will study at universities across the United States such as the University of California-Davis, University of Texas and St. John’s University, among others.
Mr. Kraaimoore thanked the Ministry as well as other sponsors like United Airlines and the Council of Magistrates of the City of Buenos Aires for their financial support to the Program.
The Friends of Fulbright program was created in 2015 by the United States Embassy in Argentina with private sector contributions. The program is administered by the Fulbright Commission in Argentina, and seeks to join efforts to cover the costs involved with undergraduate education and, in the long term, increase the total number of Argentine students who can access training at U.S. universities. In 2016, Argentina’s Ministry of Education joined the initiative making a threefold increase possible in the number of scholar participants.
The scholarships cover the costs of tuition, travel, lodging and meals, and were open to third and fourth-year students of a range of academic majors. The Embassy hopes to open a new call next year.
