ARCHIVED ALERT — REFER TO LATEST UPDATES HERE
Location: Argentina
Event: The Embassy is continuing to engage with the Argentine government on future to secure approval for additional charter flights similar to the one that departed March 27, including liaising with commercial flight operators. We will communicate any new information as soon as it is available so that passengers may book directly with the charter airline. We cannot guarantee that the Embassy will be able to arrange a U.S. State Department-organized charter flight and the costs of such tickets may be higher than standard commercial fares. Under U.S. law, passengers on a charter U.S. government-organized charter flights are responsible for paying the full cost of their ticket, which may be higher than standard fares. If you have special considerations and have not been in contact with the embassy, please email us with those concerns at buenosaires-acs@state.gov.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 “Avoid Nonessential Travel” Warning for Argentina. For more information, visit this CDC page.
There are no further confirmed charter flights to the United States at this time, however, if another charter flight becomes available it will depart from Buenos Aires. There could be as little as 24 hours advance notice before a flight departs. We understand that travel from other regions to Buenos Aires is difficult. For this reason, you may wish to plan your trip to Buenos Aires now. We anticipate all future charter flights will depart from Buenos Aires back to the United States. Please reference the previous Health Alert for options and instructions on traveling to Buenos Aires from the provinces.
The remaining commercial flight options for departing Argentina are extremely limited. There is sporadic availability on a few remaining airlines and you may have to consider split tickets on two or more carriers. U.S. citizens are responsible for booking their own travel. Many scheduled flights have been cancelled, often with little advance notice. If you believe you have an international flight out of Buenos Aires, please call your airline to confirm. The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens with plans to depart Argentina should strongly consider departing while these few options remain.
The countrywide mandatory quarantine declared on March 19 continues through March 31; however, Argentine authorities may extend such period of time. International flights coming from multiple countries, including the United States, are suspended until April 15. Argentine authorities may also extend this period of time.
If you have not done so already, the Embassy is a compiling a list of citizens seeking to leave Argentina. You must visit https://ar.usembassy.gov/covid-19, where you will find a list of information to complete and e-mail to the Embassy at the address provided on the same page. As we have additional information on departure opportunities, we will notify registered U.S. citizens through STEP.
U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States by any available means, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.
In the United States, passengers may be subject to CDC screening, health observation, and monitoring requirements upon reentry to the United States. For additional questions, visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID-19 Information for Travel page.
